A prime (PRP) rating is the power a diesel generator can deliver for unlimited hours a year on a variable load. A standby (ESP) rating is what the same machine may deliver during a utility failure, capped at 200 hours a year. Same machine, two different numbers — and the standby figure is the larger one. Which rating a quote uses decides whether two “500 kVA” offers describe the same generator at all.

The four ratings, straight from the standard
ISO 8528-1 is the standard every genset nameplate in India traces back to, and it settles the prime vs standby rating question by defining four distinct power ratings for the same physical machine. Cummins’ published engineering summary of the standard tabulates them like this:

Three details in that table are worth reading twice:
- Standby means an actual utility failure. Cummins’ summary is explicit: ESP is for the duration of a utility power failure, with — in Cummins’ words — “no negotiated outage operations”. Running through a contracted curtailment — or predictable, scheduled load-shedding — is not standby duty just because the grid happens to be off.
- Prime is the only rating with an overload allowance, and it is small and strictly time-boxed: 10% above the prime rating, one hour in any twelve, 25 hours in a year. It exists to ride through surges, not to be sold as capacity.
- LTP has a trapdoor. It permits constant 100% load, but only up to 500 hours a year — beyond that, the standard points you at the continuous rating instead.
Manufacturers can also define ratings beyond ISO 8528-1 — Cummins’ Data Center Continuous (DCC) rating, for instance, allows unlimited hours into a constant or varying data-centre load. Unfamiliar letters on a spec sheet deserve one question: which definition?
Same machine, four different numbers
Cummins’ own worked example makes the spread concrete. One generator set model (the DQLF) carries 2750 kW standby, 2500 kW prime, 2500 kW limited-time prime and 2100 kW continuous — identical engine, identical alternator, four different numbers depending on how long, how hard and how variably it is allowed to run. In that example standby sits 10% above prime; another model in the same guide (the C3500 D6e: 3500 kW standby, 3000 kW prime) shows a gap closer to 17%.
So the honest rule is qualitative: standby is the biggest number on the sheet, continuous is the smallest, and the gap varies by model. There is no fixed conversion factor. If a brochure gives you one rating and a quote gives you another, pull the spec sheet and read both numbers for that exact machine.
Why your 500 kVA isn’t always 500 kVA
Take the rating this article is named after. A prime-rated 500 kVA set — like the Cummins CI 500D5P on our ladder, 400 kW at 0.8 power factor — commits to a specific duty: variable load, unlimited hours, with the 24-hour average held at or below 70% of rating, which works out to 350 kVA. The load can swing to the full 500 kVA, and where the manufacturer permits the ISO overload, briefly to 550 kVA — one hour in twelve, at most 25 hours a year.
A machine sold as “500 kVA standby” is a different, smaller proposition. Its 500 is a ceiling for at most 200 hours a year of genuine outage running — under four hours a week, averaged — and its prime figure, the number you would compare against a rental quote, is lower. Put a standby-rated brochure next to a prime-rated quotation and the same “500” describes two different machines. The prime quote looks more expensive per kVA because the kVA is doing more work.
Why rental fleets quote prime power
Two reasons, one commercial and one printed in black and white.
The commercial one: a rental company cannot know your load profile in advance. The same fleet set might do true standby duty behind an IT office this quarter and carry a factory through scheduled load-shedding the next. At 200 permitted hours a year, a site on daily two-to-four-hour shedding exhausts the standby envelope in seven to fourteen weeks. Prime — variable load, unlimited hours — is the only rating that honestly covers whatever the next deployment turns out to be, which is why every capacity page on this site states the duty as prime alongside the full specification.
The printed one: the product itself is rated that way. Cummins India’s CPCB IV+ rating chart heads the entire 3-phase, 415 V, 50 Hz, 1500 rpm range — CI 7.5D5P up to CI 750D5P — as “Prime Power Rating”. When our quote says 500 kVA, that is the PRP figure from the maker’s own chart, not a standby number dressed up for comparison.
The comparison mistakes that cost money
The 500 kVA class is the single most quoted rating in the Indian rental market, so most of the mismatches we see in quote comparisons happen right here:
- Comparing a prime quote against a standby number. The fix costs one line in your enquiry: “state the ISO 8528-1 rating basis.” Any vendor who cannot answer has told you something useful.
- Treating the 10% overload as usable capacity. It is 25 hours a year. If your load plan needs 550, you need a bigger set, not a footnote.
- Renting “standby” for load-shedding duty. Predictable shedding is prime duty by definition — the 200-hour cap and the no-negotiated-outage clause both rule standby out. A set rated and priced for standby running prime hours is being consumed faster than its rating assumes.
- Missing parasitic loads. Cummins’ own watch-out example: a published 3350 kW rating with 100 kW of cooling fans leaves 3250 kW for the customer. Not every manufacturer publishes ratings net of parasitics — ask what is included.
- Assuming the number survives the site. Altitude and ambient temperature derate output — one manufacturer’s curve in the same Cummins guide gives up 20% of rated power at altitude. The rating is a reference condition, not a site guarantee.
Where sizing fits into this
A rating tells you what the machine may do; sizing tells you what your load needs.
